Luggage restrictions

Check-in suitcase

  • Regional flights to Johannesburg: Baggage allowance is 1 x suitcase (20kg) per person.
  • Flight to China via Dubai and Addis Ababa: Baggage allowance is 2 pieces at 23kg each per person.
  • Liquids, perfumes, creams, sharp objects (nail files, nail clippers, scissors) to be packed in the check-in luggage.

Hand luggage (to take inside the plane)

1 x hand luggage item per person not exceeding 55x40x23cm and 7kg.
Any medicine, travel documents, jewellery, camera, a change of clothes and other similar personal belongings to be packed in hand luggage.
Leave the expensive jewellery in the safe back home – you do not need it on the trip.

Do not use all your full weight allowance on departure if you intend to do shopping. Excess baggage charges are VERY expensive.
Airlines are very strict on the weight allowed in terms of luggage.
DO NOT exceed the airline weight limit per person – charges will without exception be for your own account.

It is recommended that you protect your luggage to avoid any damages during the flights and for security reasons:
Buy a luggage glove (it has a security lock) at any luggage store which you can use for the multiple flights during your trip, or
Plastic wrap your suitcase at the airport before checking in for your flight.

Flights to Johannesburg – remember to collect your luggage on arrival at OR Tambo Airport and checked-in for your flight to China.

LAGS | Liquids, Aerosols and Gases

The general rule of thumb is if you can pour it, pump it, squeeze it, spread it, smear it, spray it or spill it, it is considered a LAG.

The Rules for LAGS are:

  • Liquids, aerosols and gases in your hand luggage must be in containers of maximum 100ml each.
  • Take note: No containers over 100ml in your hand luggage, even if they are partially filled.
  • Store LAGs in a transparent, re-sealable bag (e.g. Ziploc bag). Total bag capacity must be maximum one litre. Only one bag per passenger will be allowed.
  • Be prepared for the security check by taking your bag out of your hand luggage and scan it separately.
  • To avoid having your belongings that do not comply with the rules being confiscated, pack them in your check-in luggage.
  • Medication carried on board need not be in your LAGs bag but remember to show them to security. If carrying medication, you may need to produce your prescription. Medication does not need to be restricted to 100ml. Try to keep the medication in the original packaging. This will assist security to identify the medicines and will prevent delays.

Pregnant passengers

Pregnant passengers can book up to the 29th week of pregnancy, on condition that the passenger has not had any complications or medical concerns raised by a doctor.

Passengers travelling during or after the 29th week of pregnancy need to provide a medical certificate or letter signed by a doctor or midwife.

You will not be accepted on the flight without a letter confirming:

  • Confirmation of a singleton or multiple pregnancy.
  • That there have been no complications during the pregnancy.
  • The estimated date of delivery.
  • The latest date your doctor expects you to be fit to travel.
  • That pregnant passenger is in good health.
  • That there is no known reason that would prevent passenger from flying.

Pregnant passengers are not allowed to fly after the 32nd week of a multiple pregnancy or the 36th week of a single pregnancy.
